When a young artist’s career takes off it seems the only limit is the sky, but those same careers crash and burn just as fast as their ascension. Turbulence comes with the instability of the music industry but doesn’t assume failure.
The artists who are able to make proper adjustments remain comfortably in flight until they touchdown to their destinations of enduring success. Singer/rapper Kief Brown (formally known as JR Get Money) sits coolly in the cockpit preparing to take his career to new heights.
Born in New Orleans, LA, Kief managed to harness the flavorful offerings of the city at a young age before moving to Atlanta, GA. Combining his Cajun swagger with his innate talents as a lyricist, Kief saw himself battling older heads from his apartment complex. From these battles, he gained his reputation as a skilled and charismatic emcee.
Kief’s realization of his potential drove him to hone his craft and it wasn’t before long that the right people began to take notice. He signed a joint venture deal with Universal Motown, Grand Hustle, and Mood Swing Productions. This is where he gained a mentor in Atlanta legend, Clifford Harris, famously known as, T.I.
Between touring with T.I. and refining his song-making abilities, with the likes of super producers Mannie Fresh and Jim Jonsin, Kief learned professional and creative tools that would prove valuable to his young and budding career. The label situation however, wasn’t able to accommodate the multi-faceted artistic campaign Kief’s skill set deserved.
Instead of remaining stagnant, Kief opted out of his deal and decided to actively pursue a situation that would complement his vision. While continuously working, Kief met record producer KaneBeatz (Nicki Minaj “Super Bass”, Young Money’s “Bedrock” and Trey Songz’s “Bottoms Up”) and they formed a working relationship.
Within the first 10 records the tandem collaborated on, they wrote and produced Lupe Fiasco’s 2011 hit single “The Show Goes On.” Atlantic Records saw the potential frenzy the record would evoke and did everything in their power to possess the audio goldmine.
The song began to shoot up the Billboard Hot 100 and ended with a Grammy nomination. Ironically, the song’s hook which Kief wrote and sang represented his own struggle. It was a testament to his humble beginnings, obstacles with the labels, and his subsequent resilience to fight for his dream.
After adding “Grammy nominated writer” to his resume, Kief’s clientele expanded. Other major players in the industry took notice of his knack for penning smash singles.
Since then Kief has written or co-written some of radio’s most popular jams, between Plies’ “With You,” and Stuey Rock’s “Leanin.” It seems if there’s hit song out, Kief’s name is somewhere nearby.
Though Kief has gained acclaim for his role in creating groundbreaking songs for other artists, he still maintains the drive to build his own artistry. With the recent establishment of his Forever Cold LLC, Kief looks to capitalize on his grand re-introduction into the industry and solidify his spot with the elite.
Despite the overwhelming success Kief has gained over the past year, he still remains humble. His strong Christian faith and the sacrifices of his parents keep him grounded as he ventures to higher altitudes.
As younger artists move into the ranks, Kief understands the competition only becomes deeper because he was the struggling artist at one point. However, his unmatched hunger will force him to only improve and push the limits on his art.
Kief’s key goal is to connect with the people by making good music – a simple wish with majorly impactful effects.
